The 1979 10 New Pence coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II was part of a series of coins introduced as part of the decimalization of British currency. Decimalization in the UK occurred on February 15, 1971, transitioning from the old system of pounds, shillings, and pence to a simpler decimal system. The 10 New Pence coin is an important part of this transition. Key Information: Coin Specifications: Country: United Kingdom Year of Issue: 1979 Denomination: 10 New Pence Composition: Cupro-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) Weight: 11.31 grams Diameter: 28.5 mm Edge: Milled (reeded) Design: Obverse (Front): Portrait: Features a right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Arnold Machin. This design was used on British coins from 1968 until 1984. Inscription: "ELIZABETH II D.G. REG. F.D.", which translates to "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith." Reverse (Back): Design: Features the pomegranate symbol, representing Wales, along with the denomination "TEN NEW PENCE" and the year 1979. Designer: The reverse design was created by Matthew Bonaccorsi. Historical Significance: The 10 New Pence coin was part of the decimalization process that made the currency system simpler and more straightforward. It was meant to replace the old 2-shilling coin (also known as a florin), which was worth 24 old pence.
